Week 2: Joy

Galatians 5:22-23; John 15:9-11

Big Idea: Joy is a deep gladness even on hard days.

Everyone faces challenges. Joy is choosing to trust God even in the middle of the difficult moments life throws your way, and finding the deep joy God offers.

  • Who do you know who seems to have real joy even when life is not easy? Where do you think theirs comes from?
  • Is there a hard situation in your life right now where you would not expect to find joy? What would it look like to bring it to Jesus instead of just gritting through it?

📅 Sunday, October 4, 9:00 AM
📍 The Patio

Adults – our parent breakfast is Sunday, October 4. We'll share what we've been teaching, where we're headed, and how you can stay connected to your teenager's spiritual life without losing your mind.

Week 1: Dead Romans 6: 1-4 Big Idea: Your old life doesn’t get fixed; it gets buried. Following Jesus doesn’t fix our lives, it gives us new life. This series goes through what Romans 6 says about baptism and the transformative power of following Jesus. Physically, baptism is the act of being immersed in, and then coming out of, water. But baptism is much more than a physical event; it has spiritual and symbolic significance. We can be dead to sin, raised with Christ, freed from sin's control, and alive to God. How would you define the word “grace”? How should God’s grace impact the way we live? 📅 Sunday, November 1st | 5:00 p.m. 📍 The Loft Teens - come to win or just have fun on Sunday, November 1st starting at 5:00 p.m. at our Super Mario Bros. Tournament. Come dressed as your favorite character for a chance at a prize.

Week 9: Self-Control Galatians 5:22-23; 2 Peter 1:5-8 Big Idea: Self-control is the Spirit-produced ability to say no to what controls you. We usually think of self-control as our ability to force ourselves to do hard things, willpower. When the Holy Spirit produces self-control in us, it frees us from the things that want to control us and allows our lives to be shaped by God. What kind of person do you become when self-control is actually growing in you? 📅 Sunday, October 4, 9:00 AM 📍 The Patio Adults – our parent breakfast is Sunday, October 4. Week 8: Gentleness Galatians 5:22-23; Matthew 11:28-30 Big Idea: Gentleness is strength under control. Gentleness is not weakness; it is choosing to be careful with people. Jesus described himself as gentle. When you are frustrated with someone, what is your default response? Who in your life needs you to be gentle with them right now, and what would that look like? 📅 Sunday, October 4, 9:00 AM 📍 The Patio Adults – our parent breakfast is Sunday, October 4. Week 7: Faithfulness Galatians 5:22-23; Lamentations 3:22-24 Big Idea: Faithful people keep showing up. One of God’s defining characteristics is faithfulness. God always shows up, no matter what. The Holy Spirit shapes us into people who do the same. How does knowing God is faithful to you make it easier to be faithful to other people? Where do people your age get to practice faithfulness in small ways? Where is your faithfulness strong, and where is it weak? 📅 Sunday, October 4, 9:00 AM 📍 The Patio Adults – our parent breakfast is Sunday, October 4. Week 6: Goodness Galatians 5:22-23; Galatians 6:9-10 Big Idea: Goodness is doing the right thing for others on purpose and not quitting. Sometimes it is difficult to know what the right thing to do is. Other times, it is just exhausting to keep on doing the right thing when it doesn’t seem to make a difference or when it seems like no one else is. Goodness is intentionally doing the right thing for others and not giving up. What opportunities to do good show up on a normal day that are easy to ignore? 📅 Sunday, October 4, 9:00 AM 📍 The Patio Adults – our parent breakfast is Sunday, October 4. Week 5: Kindness Galatians 5:22-23; Ephesians 4:31-32 Big Idea: Kindness is choosing to treat people the way God has treated you. Our standard for kindness is not to be polite, it is "as God in Christ forgave you." In other words, the measure of your kindness is the grace God already showed you when you had not earned it. Who is someone it is genuinely hard for you to be kind to right now? What makes it hard? How can you be more consistent in your kindness? 📅 Sunday, October 4, 9:00 AM 📍 The Patio Adults – our parent breakfast is Sunday, October 4. Week 3: Peace Galatians 5:22-23; Philippians 4:6-7 Big Idea: God's peace is a settledness in the face of problems Instead of carrying worry alone, we can take it to God in honest prayer, with thankfulness. God offers us a peace bigger than you can explain that stands guard over your heart while you deal with it. God's peace is a settledness in the face of problems. New Series: Fruit of the Spirit
Galatians 5:22-23 We sometimes make the mistake of thinking of the fruit of the Spirit as personality traits that you are either born with or without. Or we think of them as a menu of characteristics we can pick and choose to add to our lives when they are convenient. But, this list from Galatians 5 is what having the Spirit of God in our lives naturally produces. The word is fruit, singular, not fruits; these nine qualities grow together as one life. When we cultivate room for the Spirit to grow in us, it produces love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control. For the next 9 weeks, we will be discussing what each of these qualities mean and how these qualities will affect our daily lives.
